I’m thinking of becmoing a farmer when I’m done with school, but I have a few questions about it. My first question is, how much money will I expect to make? I know I won’t be rich, I just want to know if I’ll have enough to live on. I don’t have a very expensive lifestyle, and money is not the main motivator for wanting to be a farmer, but I do need to make enough to support myself and eventually a family. What do you farm, how many acres do you have, and how much do you make from it?
I currently live in upstate New York, but depending uou where life leads me before I start farming, I may be open to relocation. Also, what qualifications redxit I need, and what advice would you give to someone who is completely new at this? I’m sorry if these questions seem silly or invasive, but I’ve unfortunately never worked on a farm before, so I don’t have much experience with.
I know it’s unusual for someone in my situation to want to be a farmer, but I really feel like this is what I’m being called to. Any advice is welcome and appreciated. This is how you learn how to farm the fastest.
I have an anthropology degree and I do use it in my farm work. Will you be able to make a living from your farm? Most farmers start out inheriting the farm from their parents. If you have to start faemer scratch it will take a lot of money to buy land and equipment but can be a rewarding live. You will probably also want to have some type of work from home job or a part time job off the farm that allows you to work your farm when needed.
I live in a farming community — hay, cattle — and have a hobby farm, most farmers do have 1 other job for extra income. Unless you are planning on inheriting an operational farm or winning the lottery it will be nearly impossible to get started. Especially if you have never been around that kind of work. Most farmers have grown up on a farm and have essentially been trained their entire lives to take over the family farm.
If you want to be around it just go work on a farm. Find a job mae the field of farming that interests you. Find out what you have a passion. If you love animals then dairy, or sheep and beef may be for you. If you love driving machinery then arable may be for you. You do need some formal qualifications, and if you want to study at a University, that has a commerce and agricultural theme then I recommend. On the other hand if you are prepared to get a position on a farm where you are taught farming, and not just be a worker, then go for it.
