Money talks, but you don’t need to reciprocate. In an age of over-sharing, salary comparison should still be kept out of workplace conversations.

Set in the mid-to-late 20th century Soviet Union, this is the management sim as demanding, meticulous manual labour, not unwinding with a cup of Cadbury Instant and a copy of Chat magazine. Initial encounters with it mean pain, and only pain. But perseverance brings rewards. For one thing, the grim, flat look suits the utilitarian theme to a tee — grey, boxy buildings in sparse landscapes. That feel is brutalist tower blocks, squat, ugly factories and the kind of beyond-joyless train station design that makes Clapham Junction look like Belize. It works. I like it.

Starting tips

Manage all aspects of your own republic with planned economy , including mining resources, manufacturing goods, construction, investments, and citizens too. Create your own industrial complexes with loading and unloading stations, storage, warehouses, and factories. Build the infrastructure and manage its traffic , including roads, railways, sidewalks, conveyors, wiring, and pipelines. Wisely place and connect factories, houses and warehouses, and make the most efficient connections. Plan and build the living areas with everything your citizens may need to live their happy life, such as playgrounds, cinemas, taverns, and shops. Sell and purchase resources and goods from western countries or other soviet countries to get dollars or rubles and buy the products or resources you need Enjoy authentic soviet buildings and vehicles , as well as realistic landscapes of the 60’s to the 90’s. Play the way you want!

It’s has different levels of difficulty. But making money isn’t really the point of the game. It’s becoming self sufficient, and keeping your people content. Money is just a number. If you go the hardest difficulty and set yourselves some rules it is quite a challenge. You need to manage lot of things and cannot just buy everything as you wish.

But later I got into situation that money is not an issue. But even as I make few hundreds of rubels and dolars a year it is still a challenge to build by your own mechanisms, resources and workers and optimize your network. It is a lot about self-discipline and it takes years to complete certain plans even with unlimited cash because your mechanisms and workers does not care about how many you have in your bank account. They just take their time to do the job.

And even with milions you can get wrecked as many people did. Just the ability of being able to buy anything is not. You can lose your people and if they escape your country you are screwed without. Your industries stop working and you are. You need not only import things but get it to your people or your people to it.

In the mid game you start gaining some self-sufficiency where you can produce some resources that your republic requires, but still have to export to pay for the imports you aren’t producing. In the late game you gain a degree of self-sufficiency where you can either produce everything you need locally, requiring you to not have to import anything, or you’re only importing things because you can’t possibly be wodkers to setup the production for the things resoutces might only be required in limited quantities.

When you get to the point where you have no need to import, money ceases to have as much value as it once had, because if you’re building with locally produced resources and labor, construction costs you almost. There’s of course going to be resource consumption by the construction workers to keep them happy, and fuel to deliver resources to construction sites, but there’s otherwise resourced other cost to construction except time.

The other aspect of the game is ensuring you have a University setup early enough so you can start producing your own local experts, rather than relying on inviting them in. Without a university degree you have no teachers or doctors, and people die of old age a lot sooner than you think they.

Right now on a Hard money start the game is only challenging in the early game. Once you have some exports flowing, and you no longer have to worry about running a trade deficit, expanding your republic is only a matter of time. I took 20 years of the game time to start earning Vahkn View Profile View Posts.

If you want a challenge then play without exporting anything. With medium money it’s relatively easy to become self sufficient before your starting money is all gone, but with hard starting canot it’s brutal.

Steel: Requires coal extraction and processing to be profitable. Steel helps in construction later on, since its the most expensive type of good in construction. Cut down on extra costs by building an iron processing plant and buying the iron ore. Keep in mind that the steel mill can take max.

Terraforming like a pro

Four coal processing plants and two iron processing plants are required to sustain a steel mill at max production. Clothing: Building the fabric and clothing factory uses less money and workers. I figured out that terraforming is crucial in setting up your buildings. If you dont take care of that before nad down the buildings, theres always going to be a gap between them to form the slope.
